Mindfulness of breathing in and breathing out (Ānāpānassati) is one of the most fundamental meditation practices taught by the Buddha for the cultivation of mindfulness (sati). Thae-inn-gu Method, rooted in the Theravāda Buddhist tradition, emphasizes mindfulness of breathing as the primary foundation for mental development and the realization of the characteristics of existence. Despite the growing interest in mindfulness meditation, empirical studies focusing specifically on the practical application of Ānāpānassati in Thae-inn-gu Method remain limited. This study aims to investigate the basic practice of Ānāpānassati meditation in Thae-inn-gu Method through a seven-day meditation program. The research examines how meditators develop mindfulness and the ability to endure the painful feelings (dukkhavedanā) through continuous awareness of breathing in and breathing out. This research reviews relevant literature on the concept of Ānāpānassatti and its impact on meditators. Employing an empirical approach, the study analyzes meditators’ experiences and observations during the retreat period. The findings indicate that regular practice of mindfulness of breathing contributes significantly to the development of mental calmness, endure attention, emotional stability, and greater awareness of mind and body. Meditators reported increased capacity to observe painful feelings with equanimity, reduced mental distress. The practice also fostered greater self-discipline and resilience in responding to physical discomfort and emotional challenges. The study concludes that Ānāpānassati meditation, as practiced in Thae-inn-gu Method, serves as an effective foundation for the cultivation of mindfulness and mental well-being.
