This research paper presents an annotated translation and a critical study of the Mogharājasutta-vaṇṇanā from the Suttanipāta Aṭṭhakathā. The study is divided into two parts to evaluate both the text’s language and doctrinal meaning. Part I concentrates on a line-by-line English translation of the commentary with annotations by comparing the textual variants between the Burmese Edition (Be) and the Pali Text Society Edition (Ee / PTS). These annotations demonstrate how the traditional readings in Be preserve the grammatical accuracy and structural clarity. Part II studies a critical analysis of the commentary’s internal teaching methods and doctrinal explanations. First, it explains the Buddha’s strategic silence during Mogharāja’s first two inquiries as a practical teaching tool (upāya) to diminish his intellectual pride (māna) and mature his spiritual faculties (indriya-paripāka). Second, the analysis of the perspective of emptiness (suññata) shows how this commentary transforms the concise verse into a direct roadmap for insight meditation (vipassanā) through two core Pāḷi commentarial terms: avasiya-pavatta-sallakkhaṇa and tuccha-saṅkhāra-samanupassanā. Finally, by integrating the Burmese Nissaya, this paper uncovers alternative textual variants that enrich the practical understanding of the text.
