It is recorded in Buddhist literature that Kāḷudāyī Thera invited the Buddha with sixty verses to come back His birthplace. Kāḷudāyī Thera used the ornamental words in his verses and consequently many ornamental words can be found in those verses. However, this paper focus on the Simile (upamā-alaṅkā) based on the Theragāthā-Pāḷi, Apādāna-Pāḷi, their commentaries and related literature, especially Buddhavaṁsa-Aṭṭhakathā and the rules of Alaṅkāra in the Subodhālaṅkāra. Referring to the sources mentioned above, the researcher has attempted to cover three objectives in this paper: to demonstrate why the verses are called the “sixty verses”; to explore the simile; and to express the beauty of the sixty verses. To achieve those objectives, an analytical study research method is used. By using an analytical study research method, the researcher explained why the verses are called “sixty verses”. After that, Simile related to Deva world; Simile related to women; and Simile related to other in the sixty verses are discovered. Finally, this paper expresses the beauty of sixty verses. This paper, therefore, attempts to observe analytically the beauty of sixty verses in the existing Buddhist literature.
