- Abstract
-
It is observed that in modern Buddhism, certain monks openly declare themselves as Sotāpanna (stream winners) and thereafter renounce their monastic vows to live as laypersons. Regarding that subject, there are disagreements whether a Sotāpanna monk departs from a religious order or not. Therefore, this research topic is chosen to have a comprehensive understanding of the decision-making process about whether a Sotāpanna monk should leave a religious organization or not. Hence, this analysis will examine and provide the resolution on whether a Sotāpanna monk departs from a religious order or not, based on the Pāḷi Canon, the ideas of knowledgeable monk academics, well-versed in the teachings of the Buddha, and written literature. Upon perusing this document, readers will come to appreciate the significance of a Sotāpanna monk, the remarks found in the Pāḷi canon pertaining to the matter of whether a Sotāpan monk renounces their religious order or not, and the definitive answer to the central topic.
